5 Fun & Functional Ways to Target Preschool Speech & Language Goals with Chomper Champs
When working with preschoolers having flexible, motivating tools in your therapy room is a must to keep them engaged so we can have fun while making progress. I designed Chomper Champs to be a great tool with this experience in mind and I wanted to share with you my top 5 favorite ways to use Chomper Champs with preschoolers in speech therapy!
1. Articulation Practice That’s high repetition but Doesn’t Feel Like boring Drills
We all know getting multiple articulation reps out of a preschooler can be a struggle. But when those words become snacks for Chomper Champs? Game. Changer.
Use miniature objects or photo cards with your target sounds, let the child say the word a few times, then feed it to Chomper as a playful additional step to the process! Add in some fun reactions like, “YUM! Chomper loved that!” or “EW! He did not like that one!” and suddenly you’ve got giggles and high repetitions.
2. Vocabulary Building & Language Processing
Preschoolers thrive with themes and repetition, so have Chomper Champs eat the snacks aligned with the goal you’re targeting! Lay out a bunch of food items and tell the patient he only wants to eat vegetables as a category activity. If you’re working on functions, lay out a variety of items or photos and prompt that the puppy/kitty only wants to eat snacks that FLY, for example.
If they try to sneak in a silly one, let Chomper dramatically say, “YUCK!” or “No thanks, that’s not a veggie, it doesn’t grow in the ground!” to add context and keep the mood playful while giving you the chance to reinforce sorting, describing, and other language processing goals!
3. Language comprehension with Movement + Motivation
Need a way to make following directions feel less like a task and more like a game?
Hide or scatter items around the room and search the room to find the items. You can give clues along the way like “the snack is hiding NEXT TO something red!” or “Lets hop on one foot across the room!”
Kids stay engaged because it’s active and playful! This is one of my favorite low-prep ways to target receptive language while keeping things moving—literally!
4. Expanding Utterances in a Natural, Playful Way
There are so many ways to expand vocabulary in activities with Chomper Champs! The themed therapy kits are themed to target vocabulary, and in play-based schemes you can develop expanded utterances for Chomper Champs like “I’m so hungry!”, or “I need a drink!” throughout play!
It’s a simple way to build expressive language through modeling, repetition, and fun.
5. prepositions and growing vocabulary
Chomper Champs is awesome for building vocabulary and modeling parts of speech like prepositions, pronouns. While we dress Chomper Champs up with his accessories from the kits, put his hat ON his head, hide his treat UNDER him, drop the snack IN his mouth, the bone is BEHIND Chomper Champ! There are so many ways to incorporate prepositions into vocabulary-rich activities with Chomper Champs!
Preschool speech therapy works best when it’s rooted in joy, imagination, and flexibility—and I designed Chomper Champs to check all those boxes. He adapts to nearly any goal, grows with your caseload, and is a faithful speech therapy companion who is ready to be pulled of the shelf for grab and go therapy!
Whether you’re targeting articulation, language, or feeding therapy Chomper Champs turns your sessions into a silly, snack-filled adventure. And best of all? It’s low prep, easy cleanup, and high engagement!
